Step inside Chorley Theatre and discover a venue where over a century of entertainment heritage meets a warm, modern welcome. First opened in 1910 as the Empire Electric Picture Palace, it remains one of the world’s oldest purpose-built cinemas still in operation. Today, this much loved public theatre is a lively multi-arts hub offering plays, comedy, family entertainment, live music and regular film screenings. With its rich history, intimate atmosphere and dedicated volunteer team, every visit feels special.
Owned and operated by Chorley Amateur Dramatic & Operatic Society since 1960, the theatre continues to shine with award-winning productions, presenting at least six shows each Season. It is also home to the acclaimed Chorley Youth Theatre and the popular Chorley Empire Cinema, complete with a 21-foot screen and immersive surround sound. Touring comedians drop by throughout the year, and the venue’s cosy setting is perfect for up close music events featuring brilliant local talent. Whether you are a regular theatregoer or simply looking for a great night out, Chorley Theatre offers something to delight every audience.
Visitors can enjoy 234 comfortable seats, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, spacious dressing rooms and superb accessibility throughout the public areas. The fully licenced Empire Bar serves a wide range of drinks at reasonable prices, making it ideal for a relaxed pre-show or interval treat. In 2021 the theatre expanded with a versatile Studio space next door, perfect for community events, rehearsals and intimate performances. Friendly, welcoming and full of character, Chorley Theatre invites you to experience live entertainment at its very best.
