Chads Theatre has been a welcoming home for performers and audiences alike since 1920, when it was founded as the Cheadle Hulme Amateur Dramatic Society. Early productions toured local halls before a purpose built theatre was opened in 1959, marking the beginning of a new era for the company. Since then the venue has continued to evolve through steady development, creating a comfortable and well equipped space that proudly hosts six main stage plays and two studio productions each season. As an LTG member since 1980 and a Registered Charity, Chads has earned a reputation for high quality theatre and has collected numerous awards along the way.
The theatre’s long history is shaped by creativity, resilience and ambition. From its first performance, A Bunch of Violets, to milestone productions such as the 100th staging of An Ideal Husband and the 400th main stage production, The Snow Queen, Chads has always embraced artistic growth. New buildings, technical upgrades and thoughtful refurbishments have strengthened the venue across the decades, ensuring audiences enjoy modern comfort while the company retains its distinctive character. Even the challenges of the Covid 19 pandemic led to renewed investment, with the foyer, lounge and bar transformed during the closure.
Today, Chads Theatre remains a vibrant cultural hub where members, volunteers and audiences come together to celebrate the best of amateur theatre. With a proud heritage, an ever evolving programme and a strong sense of community, it continues to offer an inviting and inspiring space for everyone who loves live performance.
