Nestled in the heart of beautiful Wharfedale, Ilkley Playhouse is more than just a theatre – it’s a vibrant hub of creativity, history, and local pride. Since its humble beginnings on a chilly November night in 1928, when a few spirited Ilkley residents dreamed of bringing theatre to town, the Playhouse has blossomed into one of the country’s most respected non-professional theatres.
From its early days performing in borrowed halls with hand-painted backdrops and tip-up chairs, to the bustling, purpose-built venue we know and love today, the Playhouse has always been powered by passionate volunteers, boundless energy, and an unshakable belief in the magic of live performance.
With eight main house plays each year, plus studio productions, visiting acts, comedy nights, concerts, and its important role in the Ilkley Literature Festival, there’s always something happening. And let’s not forget the Green Room, where the stars of tomorrow learn the art of stagecraft today.
The theatre’s Wildman Studio, named after the visionary David Wildman, buzzes with creativity, while the warm and welcoming Wharfeside Theatre continues to draw in audiences from across Yorkshire and beyond.
Whether you’re an actor, backstage wizard, front-of-house greeter, or enthusiastic audience member, you’ll find your place here. So come and discover Ilkley Playhouse – where every show starts with a story, and every story starts with community.
Curtain up – the magic awaits!
