Group: Workington Playgoers

Other Activities
Welcome to the historic Theatre Royal, a true gem in the heart of Workington and the cherished home of the Workington Playgoers for an incredible 89 years! Our story begins in 1866 when, as The Lyceum, our stage was graced with everything from Gilbert and Sullivan operettas to lively music hall shows.
This theatre is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s a testament to immense community spirit. In 1935, a passionate group of townsfolk founded the Playgoers, raising the funds to reopen these doors. That spirit has defined us ever since, empowering members to purchase the theatre outright in 1961 and inspiring overwhelming public generosity to help us rebuild after a recent mindless act of vandalism. Through the decades, we’ve evolved from a 700-seat hall to the intimate and beautifully refurbished 149-seat venue you see today.
Having overcome closures and challenges, we are prouder than ever to offer a vibrant programme of plays and events. As we look towards celebrating the Playgoers’ 90th anniversary in 2025, we warmly invite you to share in the magic. Come and enjoy a show and be part of the enduring story of this beloved local institution.
